This year it will be celebrated on Saturday, May 18, 2019. President Truman led the effort to establish a holiday in order for citizens to unite and to honor our military heroes for their patriotic service in support of the United States of America. It’s a day to pay special tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces. Originally, there were single day celebrations for each branch of the military, this format changed on August 21, 1949, when Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of Armed Forces Day. Stemming from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense, the annual celebration now commemorates all branches of the military during one solitary day. The first official Armed Forces Day took place on May 20, 1950, and was themed “Teamed for Defense.” Nine years later, in 1959, the Western New York Armed Forces Committee was organized and held their first Armed Forces Week Celebration. A Military ceremony on Sunday begins the week-long celebration. Thursday a luncheon is held where local businesses and friends are able to hear from leading military leaders on what our present military is doing and what the future holds. This is usually centered on the branch of service selected to lead the week-long celebration, then on Saturday, we hold our Military Ball with traditions dating back to the founding of our nation. This year we celebrate our 59th year of honoring the men and women of Western New York, who have and who are currently serving America in one of the five branches of the Armed Forces and the Citizen Soldiers serving in the four branches of the New York Guard and Militia. Each year, fourteen men and women are selected as the best of the best. One Awardees is selected from each branch of the five services, their reserve components and the four branches of the New York Guard and Militia. They are honored in an awards ceremony at the WNY Armed Forces Military Ball that will be held on May 18th. 59th Armed Forces Week Military Ball Armed Forces Ball Saturday, May 18th Cash Bar beginning at 1800 hours and Cash Bar after Dinner Sit-down Dinner beginning at 1900 hours.
