Police Training in an Age of Global Terror
Recent experiences in nation-building have underscored the importance of a trained and reliable police force capable of providing everyday order to a developing state. Lessons from both Iraq and Afghanistan have shown that the growth and maturation of these forces are often bedeviled by problems both internally and externally. On Oct. 21, The Defense Education Forum (DEF) and The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) presented an assessment of police training in troubled and developing states. The presentation focused on the findings presented in LTG James Dubik, USA (Ret.) latest publication Creating Police and Law Enforcement Systems, which provides important lessons for developing indigenous police force capacity in Afghanistan, Iraq, and in future conflicts. The panelists both recently returned from Afghanistan and shared their insights on the ongoing security force development and security sector reform efforts in theater.
