Afghanistan: Regional Stability, Global Security

On 16 March, The Defense Education Forum of the Reserve Officers Association (ROA) and The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) will host a discussion on the future of Aghanistan and what to expect in the coming year. Panelists will discuss governance challenges, ongoing counterinsurgency operations, the changing face of the enemy, and the growth of Afghan security forces.  

Remarks:

Kimbery Kagan is the founder and President of ISW. Dr. Kagan is a military historian who has taught at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Yale University, Georgetown University, and American University. She has been frequently deployed to Afghanistan since the summer of 2010, assisting General David Petraeus and the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) command.

Peter Bergen is Director of the National Security Studies Program at the New America Foundation, a CNN national security analyst, journalist, and author. Bergen has traveled repeatedly to Afghanistan, Pakistan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia to report on bin Laden and al-Qaeda. He recently released his new book, The Longest War: The Enduring Conflict between America and al-Qaeda.

LTC Joel Rayburn is a U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel with 18 years of experience in intelligence and political-military affairs. LTC Rayburn deployed to Kabul in summer 2010 to help stand up ISAF’s new anti-corruption task force under the command of Brigadier General H.R. McMaster. He recently returned from Afghanistan, where he advised General David Petraeus. He is currently a fellow at National Defense University where he studies political-military affairs in the Middle East and South Asia.

Moderated by LTG James Dubik ISW’s Senior Defense Fellow who served for 37 years in the U.S. Army. During his final tour, he served as the commander of Multi National Security Transition Command - Iraq and NATO Training Mission-Iraq (MNSTC-I, NTM-I) where he oversaw the accelerated growth of the Iraqi Security Forces during the surge period.
