LEGISLATION AND MILITARY POLICY: First Look at 2010 NDAA The National Defense Authorization Act, H.R.2647, conference report has been released. While there is good news with many provisions that were included, there is also disappointment; the Senate provision, Sec. 660, for the correction on earlier retirement of Reserve Component members was not included.

TMC Presents Merit Awards at ROA The Military Coalition (an organization in which ROA and REA are members) presented the award of Merit to the Honorable Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) and the Honorable Joe Wilson (R-S.C.), on Oct. 6, 2009, for their dedicated service and significant contribution in honoring commitments to Active Duty, Guard, Reserve, and Retired servicemembers.

EDUCATION: Article Released after FPRI event on foreign fighters in Iraq and Afghanistan The Foreign Policy Research Institute (FPRI), a regular partner in Defense Education Forum events, recently held a discussion on mitigating the impact of foreign fighters in Iraq and Afghanistan. In coordination with that event, Michael P. Noonan has written an intriguing article on “Disrupting the Foreign Fighter Flow”. Mr. Noonan is the managing director of FPRI’s Program on National Security, and a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Rules for Rendering Hand Salute of U.S. Flag The National Defense Authorization Act of 2008 contained an amendment to allow un-uniformed servicemembers, military retirees, and veterans to render a hand salute during the hoisting, lowering, or passing of the U.S. flag.
