SERVICEMEMBER LAW CENTER UPDATE:
Due Process Clause Held To Apply to Veteran’s Claim
A three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit recently held that the Due Process Clause of the 5th Amendment to the United States Constitution was violated by the Department of Veterans Affairs when it considered an altered document in adjudicating a veteran’s claim for benefits for a service-connected disability.

CIOR Honors ROA Member
Maj. Gen. Evan L. "Curly" Hultman, AUS (Ret.), was bestowed the title of Honorary President of Interallied Confederation of Reserve Officers (CIOR) for Life. General Hultman, a former President of the CIOR during 1992-1994, received the recognition during the Summer Congress in Sofia, Bulgaria. General Hultman was personally nominated for the recognition by Lt. Col. Willem Veheijen of the Royal Netherlands Army (RNLA), the current CIOR President. This is the second time in CIOR’s 62-year history that this esteemed honor has been given.

ROA Member Receives International Medal
The ROA International Medal was awarded to COL Walter Henny for his outstanding contributions to the field of military medicine, to include didactic training and formal classes on specific aspects of military medicine and also Military First Aid Competitions. His efforts in these areas have been tireless over the past 20 plus years, and, indeed, many of his former students are now teaching in these fields.

Colonel Henny is a surgeon and lives in Rotterdam, Neb.  He holds the position of Surgeon in the Royal Netherlands Army Reserve. "It is almost strange: being honored for work that I simply love to do and that has become a driving force in my life," said Colonel Henny in a recent statement to ROA.

TAPS: ROA Mourns Passing of Western Regional Member Services Director
ROA Western Regional Member Services Director, LtCol Bob Hagen, passed away on Aug. 17, at his home. Colonel Hagen was an outstanding officer and recruiter for the ROA. In the last recruiting report dated Aug. 15, he made his monthly quota of recruitment points!

ROA Seeks New Executive Director and Western Regional Member Services Director

The Congressionally-chartered Reserve Officers Association (ROA) headquartered in Washington, D.C., is seeking applications for the full-time position of Executive Director. The executive director heads the national staff, manages a $6 million budget, serves the membership of approximately 68,000 officers, serves as chief legislative spokesperson, interacting with Congress and the Executive Branch, and serves as the Association’s chief administrative officer. Candidates must demonstrate and effectively communicate an understanding of the issues concerning the Total Force and National Security. The candidate must hold a federal commission in a uniformed component. The position has an excellent compensation and benefits package with a multi-year contract. ROA is an Equal Opportunity Employer. An Executive Director Search Committee has been formed to assist in this process.

Western Regional Member Services Director reports to Deputy Director of Member Services, oversees the execution of the ROA Strategic Member Services Plan within their geographic area, provides assistance and guidance to ROA Departments and Chapters in their local membership development programs, and recruits and/or renews ROA members within his/her geographic area in order that the minimum membership quota is consistently exceeded each month.

MILITARY HISTORY:
Aug. 24, 1949 - The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is an intergovernmental military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty which was signed on April 4, 1949, in Washington, D.C., and later ratified by the United States on this date. The NATO organization constitutes a system of collective defense where its members agree to mutual defense in response to an attack by any external party.
