ROA Executive Director Nominated to ASD/RA

Our Executive Director, Lt. Gen. Dennis McCarthy, USMC (Ret.), was nominated to the Senate yesterday by President Obama to serve as the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs. Since Gen McCarthy’s arrival at ROA in 2005, he has been a staunch advocate for the Reserve Components, especially for the men and women serving today during the largest mobilization in history. He led ROA’s “advocacy through education” efforts concerning issues of key importance to both active and reserve components. He advised us on the Commission on National Guard and Reserve, and championed necessities for Citizen Warriors’ equipment and benefits on Capitol Hill. During his tenure here, he has helped set ROA on a course for success for those who will follow us in the future as a bold advocate for this association as it steps into the 21st Century. Throughout his time, he continually focused on our mission to support a strong national security policy for the United States. I applaud his lifelong dedication to our Reserve family, congratulate him on his nomination, and look forward to his confirmation into this important position.
-- Ladd Pattillo, COL, USAR (Ret.), ROA National President

Law Center

ROA Establishes Servicemembers Law Center
With the heavy reliance on Reserve and Guard members in today’s fight, ROA sees many challenges with laws affecting Citizen Warriors and their employers. Citizen Warriors need advocates; Employers need both education and support; and laws need to be improved. Through this new Law Center, ROA will be the primary voice on Capitol Hill and around the country for these issues.

In this Issue:
Time to Get Serious about ROA’s Future
by Col. Ladd Pattillo, USAR (Ret.)
As president of the Reserve Officers Association, I was elected to lead the organization for this year. Leadership is not management. Leadership is the art of assessing situations, mustering resources, analyzing potential courses of action, making informed decisions on what course to take toward accomplishing the purpose of the organization, and moving forward to achieving such goals.
