EDUCATION UPDATE:
Upcoming DEF Program: The Accidental Guerrila
The Heritage Foundation and the Reserve Officer Association will host a luncheon discussion with Dr. David Kilcullen to discuss his new book, The Accidental Guerilla: Fighting Small Wars in the Midst of a Big One at Rayburn House in Room B-340 on Friday, May 1, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Dr. Kilcullen, a former officer in the Australian Defense Force and senior counterinsurgency advisor to General David Petraeus, has combined his decades of experience to help conceptualize how the numerous “small wars” that span the globe are interconnected with the broader Global War on Terrorism. RSVP to Dustin Carmack at (202) 608-6058, or James Freeman at (202) 646-7720.

TAPS: ROA Mourns Death of Former Deputy Executive Director
Col. Herman Frankel, USA (Ret.), formerly of Silver Spring, Md., died April 12, 2009 in Dallas, Texas, at 86. He served as the Deputy Executive Director and the Army Director at the Reserve Officers Association in Washington, D.C.
 
Herman Frankel will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., with full military honors at 9 a.m. on July 16. There will also be a memorial service in his honor at 2 p.m. on May 11, at the Classic Residence by Hyatt, 5455 La Sierra Drive, Dallas, Texas 75231. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Herman's memory to the Reserve Officers Association.

On May 5, ROA members with e-mail will begin receiving a new informational product called "The Intersect" with weekly news clips and abstracts of stories compiled by a professional news clipping service with access to thousands of media outlets. This member benefit is free to the Association, and will help reinforce the fact ROA is the source of pertinent information for Citizen Warriors and their families.

National Convention for Veterans will be held at the Reserve Officers Association National Headquarters Building May 13-14. T
he Convention will advance a comprehensive veterans' platform and raise the priority for veterans in our nation's agenda. The two-day program will feature the following: National Veterans' Leaders from Around the Country, Leading Members of the United States Congress, Highly Credentialed and Outspoken Speakers and Panel Members on the Subjects Veterans' Advocacy, National Defense and Budgetary/Spending Reform, and Continuous Media Opportunities with Nation and Regional Outlets.

MILITARY HISTORY:

April 19, 1775: Forewarned by Paul Revere, American militiamen fought 800 British troops on this day in Concord, Mass. At the end of the day, 1,800 British regulars had met some 4,000 Americans. The British had been forced to retreat, losing 65 soldier with an additional 173 wounded. The Americans lost 49 dead and 46 wounded. The war was on - there was no turning back.
