LEGISLATION AND MILITARY POLICY: Repeal of "Don't Ask Don't Tell" Not on Fast Track The House voted to repeal the ban on gays and lesbians serving in the armed forces, as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act. If signed into law, the measure would not immediately take effect.

HISTORY: May 31, 2010 - Memorial Day. This day of remembrance was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday to be celebrated the last Monday in May.
