LEGISLATION AND MILITARY POLICY: ROA Advises House Leaders on DADT Repeal In response to recent discussion about including a repeal of the Don't Ask Don't Tell law in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), ROA sent a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Minority Leader John Boehner urging that the Pentagon be allowed to complete its report on the impact of a repeal of DADT to allow serving members and their families an opportunity to provide feedback.

ROA President on Capitol Hill ROA President Paul T. Kayye and Legislative Director Marshall Hanson met with staff from the offices of Reps. John Larson (D-Conn.), Thomas Rooney (D-Fla.) and Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) to discuss increasing the National Guard and Reserve Equipment Appropriations from $700 million by another $500 million.

ROA Life Member Assumes Watch as 24th Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Robert J. Papp, replacing Admiral Thad W. Allen, will assume the duties as the 24th Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard. Of note, he is a previous Director of Reserve and Training, the equivalent to being the USCG Reserve Chief, and is a life member of the Reserve Officers Association.

HISTORY: May 23, 2004 - On this day, U.S. soldiers killed 16 insurgents and found a large cache of weapons at a mosque during an operation in Kufa, Iraq, a stronghold of the radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and his Medhi Army militia. Aided by Iraqi civil defense forces, troops found AK-47s, rocket-propelled grenades, rocket launchers and more than 2,000 rounds of ammunition.
