LEGISLATION AND MILITARY POLICY: Rep. Murtha Dies Following Surgery Rep. John P. Murtha (D-PA) died last week following complications from surgery. Rep. Murtha joined the Marine Corps in 1952 and remained in the Reserves until 1990. First elected to Congress in 1974, he was the first Vietnam combat veteran elected to the House and was the Chairman of the House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee. ROA offers our sincere condolences to his family and friends.
EDUCATION: ROA Dept. of California 2010 JOPDS The ROA Department of California will conduct its 2010 Joint Officer Professional Development Seminar (JOPDS) on Friday & Saturday, 23-24 April on Navy Base Point Loma, San Diego, CA. The seminar is open to all Reserve, Guard, NOAA and USPHS officers 01-04 and WO1-CW4.

HISTORY: Feb. 19, 1941 - On this day, the Coast Guard Reserve and Auxiliary Act was passed, establishing the Coast Guard Reserve. The new Coast Guard Reserve was modeled after the Naval Reserve as a military component, and was composed of two broad classifications: Regular Reservists and Temporary Reservists. Happy Birthday, USCG Reserve!
