The weekend began with the 445th Airlift Wing C-17 welcome dinner on Friday and culminated with a memorable C-17 welcome ceremony attended by more than 500 people, including many local community leaders. Featured speakers included the Honorable David Hobson, former US Representative from Ohio’s 7th District, Lt Gen. Charles Stenner Jr., Chief of the Air Force Reserve, retired Brig. Gen. Howard Ingersoll, the Boeing representative, and Col Stephen Goeman, 445th Airlift Wing Commander. Congressman Hobson championed the transfer of the C-17 mission to Wright-Patterson AFB for many years and was instrumental in the final decision to transfer nine C-17s to the base by the end of fiscal year 2012. The 445th AW is scheduled to retire its 10 C-5As by the end of fiscal year 2012. The C-17 can land combat-ready troops in remote locations or airdrop them directly where needed and has provided airlift capability to U.S. and allied forces in Afghanistan and Iraq and deployed on many humanitarian missions in the past decade.
