MESSAGE FROM OHIO ROA PAST DEPARTMENT PRESIDENT

Our 88th Annual Ohio State ROA and the 63rd Annual ROAL Convention was held on 3-5 May 2013 at the Crowne Plaza Blue Ash Cincinnati at 5901 Pfeifer Road in Cincinnati.  We held a quick Council meeting at 1700 and announced that that there were no changes to the program at this time and the Hospitality Suite was now open to meet with new and old friends for fun, food, and relaxation.

The convention was called to order on Saturday 4 May 2013 at 0800 and CDR James Bodmer, USN Ret, Master of Ceremonies was introduced.  CDR Bodmer introduced Hamilton County Commissioner Todd Portune who gave a hearty Welcome to Hamilton County.  A quick Welcome followed by CDR Thomas Gregory, USN Ret President - Department of Ohio ROA, Mrs Shirley Mendralski, President – Department of Ohio ROAL, and CAPT Samuel Wright, USN Ret JAGC, National ROA Representative.

CDR Bodmer then indicated that the Convention is being dedicated to Honor MAJ Thomas Griffin, one of the Doolittle Raiders (navigator of plane #9) who planned to attend but recently passed away. He then introduced Mr Raymond Hughes, who assisted Tom as a traveling companion for the past number of years.  Mr Hughes talked about Tom’s life for about 30 minutes.  Anyone interested in history could have listened for hours.  CDR Bodmer thanked Mr Hughes and introduced COL Bob Labadie for his presentation on the Hero to Hired Program.  After COL Labadie finished, CDR Bodmer thanked him and called for a half hour break prior to the ROA Business Session.  ROAL members departed at that time for their Business Session.

ROA members returned for their Business Session and quickly the various reports that needed to be accomplished and then assembled into the Five Districts to hold their Elections of District Directors.

Upon completion, the results of the District Elections were given to the Department Secretary and the convention recessed for the Luncheon.

The luncheon was held in the Blue Ash room.  After lunch, CDR Bodmer introduced CAPT Samuel Wright, USN Ret JAGC for his presentation on USERRA.  Immediately after CDR Bodmer introduced COL Anthony “Chip” Augello, USAF Ret for his presentation on the Yellow Ribbon Program.  After thanking COL Augello, CDR Bodmer introduced LTCOL Robert “Bob” Perry, USMC Ret for his Veterans Service Commission Update.  When completed, CDR Bodmer thanked LTCOL Perry and introduced LTC William A Gallinger, USA – University of Cincinnati Professor of Military Science and LTCOL James A Braunschneider, USAF – University of Cincinnati Professor of Air Science for their updates on the Army and Air Force ROTC Program at UC.  CAPT Wright was then called back to bring a message from National ROA.  All the presentations were well received by the members in attendance.  CDR Bodmer announce a short break and asked everyone to meet in certain areas of the Carpenter Room for their Section Meetings and Election of Officers of their Sections and then reassemble at 1500 for the Business Session with Department President CDR Thomas Gregory.

CDR Gregory called the Business Session back to order to complete the Convention Reports, entertain any Resolutions, receive the Reports of the Nominating Committee, hold Elections of New Officers, complete any Unfinished Business and discuss any New Business.  The convention then recessed until 1800 when the President’s Reception was held.

At 1850, members assembled for the Banquet in the Blue Ash Room.  CDR Bodmer as Master of Ceremonies called for the Presentation of Colors by the Princeton High School Navy JROTC.  The Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem followed.  CDR Bodmer then called on the ROAL Chaplain Mrs Dorothy Wiliams for the Invocation.  The POW-MIA Ceremony and Toasts were held and dinner was served.  Following dinner, CDR Bodmer introduced the guest speaker – Congressman LTC Brad Wenstrup, USAR.  Everyone present was totally impressed.  CDR Bodmer then called on CAPT Samuel Wright to swear in the Newly Elected Officers of ROA and ROAL.  After the Banquet everyone returned to the Hospitality Room.

On Sunday, the Past Presidents held their “Past Presidents Breakfast” in the Dining Room and at 0830 the Memorial Service honoring deceased ROA/ROAL Members and deceased Ohio Active Duty members was held.  A short ROA and ROAL Business Session was held following the Memorial Service and the Convention came to a close.  This was a Great Convention.

90th ROA ANNIVERSARY GALA

Several Department of Ohio ROA and ROAL members attended the 90th ROA Anniversary Gala held 5 Feb 2013 at the Willard InterContinental Hotel in Washington, DC.  Among the personnel attending were CAPT George and Dorothy Williams (OH-12), COL Gary and Jennie Loxley (OH-16) and LTC Ed and Dewey Rougeau (OH-16).

The Gala included a reception and social hour, entertainment, dinner and an awards ceremony.  Attendees included the current and 12 former National ROA Presidents, many current and former members of Congress, and ROA/ROAL members and their guests from various departments throughout the country.  The relatively small size of the room capped the attendance at 300.

The Willard Hotel was the site of a 1922 meeting which is now generally recognized as the initiation of the Reserve Officers Association.  The 90th ROA Anniversary Gala was held in the same hotel room that hosted the 1922 meeting.  A photograph and explanation of that first meeting of Reserve Officers is on permanent display in the Hotel's Museum.

ROA and ROAL from the Deparmtne of Ohio were happy they were represented at this significant event.

Pictures and Videos of the event are on the ROA National Website at http://www.roa.org .
