ABOUT THE LAW CENTER:
In today's national security environment, the nation relies heavily on the Reserve and Guard. Increased reliance on our Citizen Warriors drives a greater need for service members in the Reserve Components and their employers to better understand the basic laws that apply to both of them. Each has duties and responsibilities. The Service Members Law Center provides resources, links and information on the laws governing the service member/employer relationship. The SMLC does not accept clients nor engage in the practice of law. It does provide linkage to applicable laws, attorneys, bar associations, law schools, and other resources, such as the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Ombudsman Services Program and Customer Service Center and American Bar Association’s Military Pro Bono Project.
Capt. Sam Wright, USN (Ret.), an acknowledged expert on the subject, has authored and co-authored more than 1,500 law reviews on areas of law affecting citizen warriors. These Law Reviews are available here in pdf format. organized chronologically and by subject index.
Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR)
ESGR is a Department of Defense program whose mission is to inform and educate service members and their civilian employers regarding their rights and responsibilities under USERRA. ESGR does not enforce USERRA, but serves as a neutral, free resource for employers and service members.
ESGR’s Ombudsman Services Program provides information and mediation on issues related to USERRA, and the ESGR Customer Service Center is available to answer USERRA questions. Specially trained ombudsmen are available to help members of the National Guard and Reserve resolve disputes with their civilian employers related to military service through neutral and impartial mediation.
American Bar Association Military Pro Bono Project
The ABA Military Pro Bono Project accepts case referrals from military attorneys on behalf of junior-enlisted, active-duty military personnel and their families with civil legal problems, and it places these cases with pro bono attorneys where the legal assistance is needed. The Project is also the platform for Operation Stand-By, through which military attorneys may seek attorney-to-attorney guidance.
As a service to all serving Citizen Warriors, the Service Members Law Center has compiled individual states' laws concerning military leave for public employees.
