Chapter 15 Seattle, Washington

May 30, 2014

Hello One and All:

Well here we are at the begining of summer in the great northwest and I ceratinly hope everyone has a great and safe time. With the dry weather, maybe I'll find my golf swing and use it on our road trip to the ROA National Convention in Long Beach this coming July.

Since summer is close, that means the colleges, universities and high schools are wrapping up their ROTC / JROTC programs for the year. Through the great work of our friend COL Jim Sissel, many schools have received their awards and medals to honor their distinguished cadets at boith the ROTC and JROTC levels. Some of us have recently partricipated in presenting these medals and awards. I'll just relate a couple that I was involved in and I know others of our membership  were involved in others.

On May 17th, CAPT Rick Thomas, Capt. Ed Hrivnak and I had the pleasure of attending the Pacific Luthern University ROTC Military Ball and Awards Ceremony at Ft. Lewis. This was a delightful event to see the cadets in unifrom and their dates dessed in formals. Made me try to think back a few years but it was so long ago, I couldn't. Anyway, we had a great time and presented three awards to their members before being treated to  a great dinner. Being the "ranking" officer in the room and almost the oldest person there, I gave the command to vacate the area before the young ladies tried to talk us into dancing after dinner. Reluctantly the other members of my detail consented and we left the kids to their after dinner activities.

Then during the afternoon of May 22nd, COL Jim SIssel, CAPT Rick Thomas, LTC Larry Sierle and I attended the ROTC graduation and awards ceremony at the University of Washington. Prior to their ceremony it was great visisting with some of the staff memebrs still there from when I retired as well as with some friends who are senior NCO's and have recently become ROA members. It was great to hear that CMSgt Bill Harker, Jr. and CMSgt Steve Pennington (both USAF Ret)  had signed up recently. They were there to present awards on behalf of the National Sojourners and the Scottish Rite. From ROA, we presented a total of nine awards to Air Force, Army and Naval Cadets some of whom were graduating and some even had their assignments waiting for them. They covered everything form medical to infantry to engineering in their choices of duties.

It is refeshing to visit these young officers and students seeking their way through our military today. When I look at them I know although our country has issues with some of todays youth that these cadets are on solid ground and represent our future leaders.

I would like to thank Teri Barnes for reaching out and bringing in our newest department member to our last dinner meeting. Through Teri's efforts MST2 (E-5) Heather Morse USCG on active reserve duty at Pier 36 has joined ROA  and I am sure she will be active and we will hear and see more of her in the future.

I have relayed three new NCO memebrships that have occurred for this department recently. In line with President Ed's message, I to urge you to help us in this effort of recruiting those Enlisted/NCO personnel that you might know and invite them to join us.

Don't forget to join us for the department council meeting on June 14th @ 1PM at the McChord AFB Golf Course Club House. There will be a round of golf prior to the meeting with T-time to be announced. This promises to be a very lively meeting with several important and relevant topics up for discussion that will be voted on at the National Convention and will affect the operations of ROA itself in the future.

This will be followed by the National ROA Convention in Long Beach, CA. on July 23-26th at the Renaissance Long Beach Hotel (1-562-437-5900). All registration information for the conference and the hotel can be found on the national ROA website (www.roa.org).

Last but not least will be our own annual department  convention to be held Sept 19-21st at Pacific Beach Resort. Please contact the resort at 1-877-628-9233 or www.dodlodging.net. When their website comes up, type in Pacific Beach, WA. to go to the resorts home page. LTC Stoddard will be sending out the reservations forms soon, but call now for your rooms.

Please be sure to visit both this chapters websight and the departments for upcoming events for the coming year. If other chapters have announcements for future meetings and events they would like posted, please forward the information to CAPT Rick Thomas at randsthomas@comcast.net   so that he may post them for you. Other chapter’s information will be on the department website only.

So again, I wish you all a happy and safe summer and I certainly hope to see you at one or more of our upcoming events. We are only as strong as our participation , so please get involved and join us when you can.

Thank You
